With the motto of being “More than a Game”, the First Tee program has launched at Kwinana Golf Club to help golfers from all walks of life to learn valuable life lessons through participation in golf.

While perfecting your golf swing is one of the key lessons taught in the program, Kwinana’s current crop of 39 youngsters will also develop a set of skills that will give them a leg up in the golf industry but also off the course.

The First Tee Program originated in the US as a youth development organisation that has reached over 9 million young people, providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

With the support of the organisations such as the LPGA, Masters Tournament, PGA of America, PGA TOUR and USGA, The First Tee has reached more than 9 million young people since its inception in 1997 and reaches youth on golf courses, in schools and at other youth serving locations.

Participation in the program is free for children aged between seven and 17 years, with all funding provided through the WA Golf Foundation, the City of Kwinana, Healthway and other supporting partners.

“It’s been a long term goal of the Kwinana Golf Club to build a strong junior program” said club manager Linda Borrell.

“The program will help create a strong tie with the local population, and having them involved in a club and giving them the chance to build friendships, a golf ethic and a strong game to become a part of our Junior Pennants history.”

Kwinana’s application is the first to be approved in Australia by The First Tee, with the organisation extremely keen to see success so it can expand throughout the state.

During it’s first year, Kwinana will roll out the program to as many schools and direct entrants as they can, with funding used to help promote and create awareness.
