{"id":338,"date":"2017-06-23T16:20:23","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T08:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagf.org.au\/cms\/?p=338"},"modified":"2023-08-29T15:18:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T07:18:57","slug":"kwinana-breaking-new-ground-with-first-tee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagf.org.au\/cms\/2017\/06\/kwinana-breaking-new-ground-with-first-tee\/","title":{"rendered":"Kwinana breaking new ground with First Tee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/okcJt49Ttf4\" width=\"650\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Venture to Kwinana Golf Club on a Thursday afternoon and you are greeted by the sort of organised chaos that can help describe Western Australia\u2019s growing worldwide reputation as a leader in producing golfing talent.<\/p>\n<p>Turn the corner past the impressive two-story clubhouse and he sight of 60 kids running around, gleefully clutching seven irons amid a lively hum of playground activity, is about the most unlikely vision you might imagine for a sport unfairly rendered to staid stereotypes of old suits and ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, what is going on at Kwinana is about as far away from institution as possible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/2017\/06\/a-life-less-ordinary-brittney-goldsworthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>PODCAST: Inside The Ropes<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s because the club is enjoying a boom in popularity amongst young children in the area after beginning its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TFTkwinana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The First Tee programme<\/a> two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Since starting the initiative \u00a0\u2013 a US-based curriculum that weighs life values equally to golfing skills \u2013 Kwinana has welcomed 238 golfers from as young as four-years-old to the course.<\/p>\n<p>Trish Glazbrook, who is tasked with co-ordinating the children and coaches as The First Tee Programme Manager, oversees an eight-person team of coaches and officials that includes Jess Whitting \u2013 who last year drove straight from her success at the WA Amateur Championship to coach the kids.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30419\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/P1110004-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30419\" class=\"wp-image-30419 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/P1110004-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kwinana &#8216;The First Tee&#8217; Programme Manager Trish Glazbrook<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That commitment is immediately obvious when you watch Kwinana\u2019s staff work with the kids, from Tour professional Daniel Hoeve to coaches Joel Landers, Jason Ricetti, Brendan Rayner and Shane Foreman to programme managers Glazbrook and Ryan Upchurch.<\/p>\n<p>And the results are significant with Glazbrook estimating an average of 55 kids turn up each week.<\/p>\n<p>Best of all they do so because it has become the fashionable place to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t ever really needed to promote the programme,\u201d Glazbrook said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we started we were told that we should only start with 16 participants until we found our feet and got comfortable. The first night we started with 36!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve never had under 36 since and it just seems to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a Facebook page that I put a lot of stuff on to promote what we\u2019re doing but quite often I get a phonecall from parents that will go along the lines of: \u2018Joey at school said this about what you\u2019re doing and I want to bring our kids down now\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTFTkwinana%2Fposts%2F1231433516905296%3A0&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"589\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And the kids continue to turn up rain, hail or shine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, rain is no deterrent for the kids. They love it and if it is wet I\u2019ll just email (general manager) Brent Dawkins and ask if we can use upstairs in the clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take all the kids up there and set up putting activities \u2013 it gets pretty noisy!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne night we held it downstairs and the old gentlemen, with 40 kids putting around them, were just looking at us thinking \u2018really\u2019. But they\u2019re great. They welcomed it and no-one complains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think it\u2019s fantastic that we have so many kids down at the club.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/2017\/06\/mount-lawley-and-lake-karrinyup-return-to-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>PENNANTS: Women&#8217;s Pennants Division 1 Final &#8211; Lake Karrinyup v Mount Lawley @ Royal Perth, Sunday June 25<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The benefits to Kwinana have already been obvious with the club fielding a junior girls pennants team for the first time ever this year and there are plans to expand on that in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had 14 kids who have graduated to being club members and playing pennants,\u201d Glazbrook said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that was done in a bit of a rush at the end of last year with pennants starting on January 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully this year we\u2019re looking at submitting two teams into both the boys and the girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30418\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Caleb-Whtye-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30418\" class=\"wp-image-30418 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Caleb-Whtye-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"559\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caleb Whyte (second from right) flanked by his mates on course at Kwinana GC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The impact of the programme is not felt in sheer numerical terms, however, with the significance of what the club are doing perhaps best reflected in the story of Caleb Whyte.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-year-old suffers from a form of muscular dystrophy but has become a regular at the classes over the past 12 months and has graduated to play on course.<\/p>\n<p>While Western Australia has developed a worldwide reputation for producing top-level talent in the likes of Minjee Lee, Curtis Luck and Hannah Green such stories underpin the relevance of grassroots endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe joined us in April last year and he has improved week on week,\u201d Glazbrook said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis sports teacher, who is also one of my part-time coaches, actually recommended that he join up and it has been so worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere he can\u2019t play footy or rugby he has the ability to swing and club and participate and when you see him he achieves the skills in the same way that the kids around him are &#8211; he\u2019s not hindered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started in the first group and has moved through to play on course and he thoroughly enjoys it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30417\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/P1100834-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"482\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Western Australia Golf Federation (WAGF) has poured in $50,000 to help fund the initiative, in addition to commercial local support from the likes of Kevin Hammer and his team at GF Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The money initially helped to launch the programme, which is based in the United States and which seeks to teach golf to children in conjunction with nine core life principles \u2013 honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose core values are central part of what we do \u2013 we focus on one of those each week &#8211; but fun is an important part too,\u201d Glazbrook said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s little games to play and tasks to accomplish \u2013 it\u2019s not just swinging a club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids get pegs for doing what they\u2019re instructed to do and following the core values. At the end of the session, and when they\u2019ve got 10 points, they can help themselves to a reward out of the big reward bucket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s opportunity for all the kids to be involved. The young ones start on the driving range and putting green and do 55 hours and then we assess their core values and ability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can then step up to the group at the bottom of the driving range before they play on course, where those 14 kids have graduated to become pennants players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/P1100808-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30420\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/P1100808-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The programme is structured so that it is delivered in the same way across the globe, with centres in varied countries from Guatemala to Chile and New Zealand as well as across the US.<\/p>\n<p>Kwinana is the only First Tee International Curriculum Provider in Australia, and runs a 10-week programme during school term, from 4pm, at the cost of a gold-coin donation each week.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to see why the kids keep coming back, and for parents Kwinana\u2019s grassed areas offer an opportunity to roll out a blanket and relax in the late afternoon sun while Glazbrook and her team run a programme they were alerted to when former president Nick Noble was living in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came back with the idea and he spoke to Shane, who is our vice-captain, and he presented it to the golf club and said \u2018this is what I want to do\u2019,\u201d Glazbrook said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was coaching cricket at the time so I said if you want a coach I\u2019ll get involved. He said: \u2018You\u2019re programme manager\u2019. It has gone from there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Community support remains critical to the success of the program with Kwinana on the look out for sponsors and volunteers in addition to the likes of Whitting, who now spends her time in the United States at Rogers State University in Oklahoma, but still mentors the girls while in Perth during her holidays.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30421\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Jess-Whitting-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30421\" class=\"wp-image-30421 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Jess-Whitting-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jess Whitting (second from right) is back in town and helping mentor The First Tee kids<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have limited funds and we\u2019re currently looking for corporate sponsorship and things like that so we pick up equipment where we can find it cheap,\u201d Glazbrook added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got a lot of these clubs off Gumtree. The club over there, quite a lot of them have been donated by members so we\u2019ve cut them down to suit the smaller ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at contacting the industrial strip \u2013 GF Engineering\u00a0 up in Naval Base \u00a0&#8211; they\u2019re big supporters of junior golf and they\u2019re happy to sponsor us each year. That\u2019s a great thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now Glazbrook and her team are preparing for the end of the latest 10-week run of classes, that will culminate in a \u2018fun week\u2019 on June 29 when the children are set to dress up as Minions from the Despicable Me films.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Shane is going to dress up as the Purple Minion,\u201d Glazebrook laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be interesting have so many kids dressed up as Minions running around and we are actually planning to film our own \u2018Minions Takes the Golf Course\u2019 movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a club that has spent the past two years dismissing old stereotypes \u2013 a golf course full of Minions is probably about par for the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>:: G<\/em><em>olfWA is looking for new ways to grow the game at every level in the state and you can help by simply following us on social media.
