{"id":343,"date":"2017-08-07T16:44:58","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T08:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagf.org.au\/cms\/?p=343"},"modified":"2023-08-29T15:18:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T07:18:57","slug":"bakers-hill-earns-national-acclaim-for-junior-golf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagf.org.au\/cms\/2017\/08\/bakers-hill-earns-national-acclaim-for-junior-golf\/","title":{"rendered":"Bakers Hill earns national acclaim for junior golf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have ever travelled back to Perth along the Great Eastern Highway there is every chance you have stopped off in Bakers Hill for a pie or sausage roll.<\/p>\n<p>The shop is an institution of modern-day folklore that you would otherwise miss as you hurtle through a blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it town of just over 1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>But if Bakers Hill has gained notoriety for its pastry delights then one of its best-kept secrets lays hidden just a couple of hundred metres away at the golf course.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/sts-golfwa-junior-tour\/\">NEXT EVENT: Smarter Than Smoking Junior Tour &#8211; Royal Fremantle; Sunday, August 27<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For almost 40 years Bakers Hill has run a junior golf programme that is the envy of any other.<\/p>\n<p>It recently earned deserved national recognition, when Bakers Hill was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mygolf.org.au\/news-display\/bakers-hill-mygolf-cooks-up-a-storm\/97634\">named the MyGolf Centre of the Month for July<\/a>, but for those in the region the selfless philanthropy of the club\u2019s junior co-ordinator Suzanne Waters and coach Dave Cockman are well established.<\/p>\n<p>Their philosophy is simple \u2013 make golf as accessible as possible for children.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wzWbq-bnKBs\" width=\"650\" height=\"385\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That has primarily entailed opening up the course to kids on Saturday mornings and providing them with free equipment so all they, and their parents, need to do is turn up and enjoy themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just focus on making all the kids welcome,\u201d Waters told Golf WA when the town,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/club-districts\/bakers-hill-golf-club\/\"> located about 75 kilometres east of Perth<\/a>, hosted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/sts-golfwa-junior-tour\/\">Smarter Than Smoking Junior Tour<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy focus is getting the kids who wouldn\u2019t perhaps play another sport to come and play. They can come down and we have all the kit they need in our shed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGolf is traditionally an elitist sport, memberships can be quite pricey and generally it has been the sphere of the wealthy and privileged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to break down the barriers so that any kid can come here; any family can come here. We have a shed full of equipment so that they can come and not have any outlay at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Families travel from as far as Quairading to take part in the club\u2019s Saturday morning junior days \u2013 a round trip of 240 kilometres \u2013 and even plan their week around it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31788\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/111-chasing-balls-on-sand-green-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"550\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually we try and get here all the time. We combine it with our big shop in Northam,\u201d said Karen, the mother of one of the club\u2019s juniors, who regularly makes the trip from Quairading in the relevant term times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have got the fuel then we\u2019re here. If it works out that we don\u2019t have the fuel then we miss out for the week which we&#8217;d prefer not too!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is a ringing endorsement of what Bakers Hill are doing and is hardly an isolated case with the club boasting 41 MyGolf junior members \u2013 a significant number for such a small town.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mygolf.org.au\/default.aspx?s=mygolf-participant-s1-home&amp;ordistance=1&amp;postcode=6000&amp;distance=250\">MYGOLF: Find your nearest centre and join up<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe draw on a really big area because they hear about our programme \u2013 we want kids to be welcome and not only learn golf skills but also life skills,\u201d said Waters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had kids from Mundaring come up because there\u2019s no junior golf down there. From Chidlow, Wooroloo, Wundowie to Clackline &#8211; we\u2019ve had Northam kids come out when there wasn\u2019t any juniors on there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had kids from York and kids from Toodyay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dave-Cockman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31801\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dave-Cockman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The results are reward for the countless hours Waters and Cockman spend on the course either teaching \u2013 both have Community Coaching Accreditation \u2013 or in the clubhouse planning and generally providing the sort of support that is vital for grassroots sport to blossom.<\/p>\n<p>Their efforts are ably supported by the senior club \u2013 which paid for the shed that houses the the kids&#8217; equipment. President Chris Harris has also helped supply that equipment from his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drummondgolf.com.au\/\">Drummond Golf store in Cannington<\/a>, in addition to donations from elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Last year Cockman celebrated 20 years of involvement with Bakers Hill\u2019s junior programme, during which time he has worn many hats from co-ordinator to secretary and coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made a great deal out of that and got him a prize,\u201d said Waters, who has been involved for 12 years herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year he was nominated for a regional volunteering award and he just missed out. They want him to be nominated again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cockman moved to the area in the mid-1990s with his wife Karen and their two kids and within a year of joining as members he took over the running of the junior programme from Gordon Ashman, a patron of the senior club and who had been overseeing the junior programme for the 11 years previous after it was founded by Ed Whitely in 1979.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1111-checking-scorecard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31794\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1111-checking-scorecard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I really love is teaching the kids \u2013 I suppose you\u2019re not involved for 21 years unless you do,\u201d said Cockman, who has moved to Roleystone but continues to make the trek over the hills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s plenty to keep you busy with ups and downs. We had an influx of left-handed kids one year and so then we went and bought a heap of left-handed clubs &#8211; now we have no left-handers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy teaching the kids and giving them a chance to play the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cockman still gets around Bakers Hill\u2019s sand greens course himself when he finds the time, adding: \u201cI got my handicap down to an 18 but now I\u2019m back out to a 24 because my neck and back are stuffed!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-four is still enough to shark the odd trophy though. I\u2019m still competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cockman was therefore well credentialed to offer advice when kids from the Perth metro area were given the opportunity to play on Bakers Hill\u2019s sand greens as part of the Smarter Than Smoking Junior Tour.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31793\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dad-and-son-with-rake.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sorted a few of them out,\u201d said Cockman, who noted a lack of rain in the lead-up had left the sand soft, fluffy and hard to master.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had of had some rain these kids would really have to concentrate on chip and run \u2013 you have to pitch them about five or 10 metres short of the green. Chip and run on sand greens is pretty standard practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s just great they\u2019re getting exposure to the fact that there are other types of golf courses around. You need to get on a course and size up the first couple of holes so that itself is a good lesson for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Smarter Than Smoking Junior Tour kids were given an introduction on how to play sand greens, and the etiquette of raking the sand before a putt, before they teed off from Marangaroo Golf Course head professional Rob Farley.<\/p>\n<p>Farley has established a link with clubs in the Avon Valley and regularly visits the region to provide coaching, which supplements the work being done by the likes of Waters and Cockman.<\/p>\n<p>Funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wagf.org.au\/cms\/\">Western Australia Golf Foundation<\/a> has helped Bakers Hills to pay for Farley\u2019s added expertise and, just as vitally, free up Waters and Cockman to focus on delivering their innovative schedule of events that have proven so successful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Rob-Farley-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31787\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Rob-Farley-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try and make it fun \u2013 we even run a night golf programme,\u201d Waters said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have a sausage sizzle for all the family \u2013 we do a lot of family stuff &#8211; and then where it\u2019s dark we have some fluro glow-in-the-dark sticks that we line the fairways with and we hang something off the flags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe give all of the kids a glow-in-the-dark necklace so that they can\u2019t get lost as well! We have the special balls that have the little glow in the dark insert. We get around 50 to come to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also have a family day at Oasis down at the Par Three in the Swan Valley and we run our Junior Open as well as the coaching from Dave and myself plus Rob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Years of working with kids has taught Cockman and Waters what works, and what doesn\u2019t, with that tried-and-trusted simple and effective philosophy the core of what they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the children first come Dave and I run through the basics and try to get the kids out on the course because when children join a junior club they don\u2019t want to come and do drills,\u201d Waters said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Kid-on-sand-green-bush-behind.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31796\" src=\"http:\/\/www.golfwa.org.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Kid-on-sand-green-bush-behind.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to come and play golf, but if you don\u2019t teach them the basics they\u2019re going to get frustrated very quickly and won\u2019t continue playing golf to then improve their skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRob will come down soon after that to help out \u2013 he\u2019ll do two hours of teaching \u2013 and the parents can walk the course with the kids as they tee off from 100m and 150m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be a bit chaotic getting 40 kids out on a nine-hole golf course and it becomes fairly congested, but we love it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose that\u2019s also good for patience \u2013 which is another useful skill for children and their parents to acquire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>:: \u00a0MyGolf is the national junior programme that has the support of Western Australia&#8217;s LPGA Tour star Minjee Lee and former world number one Jason Day.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>To find out more about joining up, and where your nearest MyGolf centre is, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mygolf.org.au\/default.aspx?s=mygolf-participant-s1-home&amp;ordistance=1&amp;postcode=6000&amp;distance=250\">click on this link<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have ever travelled back to Perth along the Great Eastern Highway there is every chance you have stopped off in Bakers Hill for a pie or sausage roll.
